Mudroom Storage Ideas

Having a mudroom in your house, or a designated drop zone that can function like one, helps everyone corral their most needed items. When it’s time to go, it’s that much easier to lay your hands on what you need quickly and efficiently. Here are some mudroom storage ideas that will have you breezing in and out the door with little effort.

  1. Add a memo board and calendar to the wall. Here you can place birthday party invitations, write appointments down on the calendar and keep track of everyone’s movements throughout the week.

  2. Use color to create a statement. Instead of white cabinetry, choose a bold dark blue or another favorite color so that it will stand out as soon as you walk in the door. Paint the inside of your door a bright, cheerful color.

  3. Take the door off. A entryway coat closet can easily transition to a mudroom nook by removing the door, adding a bench for putting on shoes, hooks for coats and jackets and bins under the bench for storing shoes or sports equipment.

  4. If you have room, add a designated space for your pet. Creating a pet crate at the bottom of cabinetry is the perfect spot to corral your animal when you’re not at home. Including a pet grooming station can also make bath time an easy chore when your dog decides to get into the mud.

  5. Label your bins so you can easily find what you need on the way out the door.

  6. If you don’t have a designated mudroom, turn to your laundry room or an empty garage wall to create one. Add storage to help contain all the items it needs to hold. If you choose an organization system that is sectioned off like lockers, make sure each family member has their own spot. Personalize each cubby with each member’s favorite artwork.

  1. Add a touch of farmhouse style to your mudroom with the addition of wicker baskets. Not only are they visually appealing, but they also hide any clutter. Add a peg rail for jackets, backpacks and bags.

  1. Use vertical space. Even a front entryway can benefit from floor to ceiling cabinetry that doubles as a mudroom space. And if you only have a small corner, mount a coat rack with a flat top for hats, bags or accessories.

  2. Have a designated spot for mail. It’s pretty easy to clutter your counters or tables with all the junk mail. Having an attractive mail organizer on the wall makes it easy to keep those surfaces clean.

  3. Utilize space under stairs. Add an upholstered bench with open under-seat storage equipped with basked to hide clutter. Wall hooks provide a place for jackets or hats.
